Fresh Shrimp in Townsend

September 23, 2021 by chito

If you want to get fresh shrimp right off family-owned boats, then consider Skinner’s Seafood in idyllic Townsend, GA. Located just 10 miles NE from Darien, Skinner’s provides a broad vista of the marshland and Blackbeard Creek. The prices are reasonable: $9 per pound and you can’t ask for anything more fresh. The Skinner’s are down-home friendly and have been in this business for many years.

Between 400 and 500 licensed shrimp boats do most of the commercial harvesting in Georgia. Their territory ranges from the coast to eight miles offshore. The shrimp industry accounts for more than 80% of the state’s total value of caught seafood — between 4- to 10-million pounds weighing in at over $7.5 million.

After I retired from the Navy, I attended George Washington University to get my MBA. I left with a diploma, and also with a food tech startup called RUNINOut. Our goal was to add as many restaurants, stores and attractions to the site and after running it for five years, I had oversaturated the local Washington, DC market. It was time to take RUNINOut on the road.

In order for my startup to grow, I had to add more restaurants – that meant getting outside this blessed Beltway and exploring the highways and byways in small town suburbia.
