Come for the Cheung Fun!

March 1, 2021 by chito

Ever since I was a little kid growing up in Kowloon, I've enjoyed cheung fun served fresh from unpretentious carts on the gritty street corner. For mere pennies, we got a savory container of rice rolls mixed with hot chili oil and soy sauce and I was off to a fantastic start to a brand new day. If we decided to splurge, we could order ours with a fried egg or even fresh … [Read more...] about Come for the Cheung Fun!

Amish Bulk Food & Bakery

February 5, 2021 by chito

Richard worked six days a week at Miller's Bulk and Bakery in Medina, NY. It was a family business and it was his passion and belonging to provide the best meats, bakery and cheese to customers who flocked here from all over the state. The Amish work hard in the deli, stocking shelves and making cheese. Most of the products are "bulk," meaning they have broken down … [Read more...] about Amish Bulk Food & Bakery

A Bar Flows in Brooklyn

September 9, 2020 by chito

O'Keefe's is a a good ole Irish pub in downtown Brooklyn with a sporty theme. Located next to the Central Court Building it's a perfect spot for after work drinks. The Barclays Center is not too far away, so the spot draws a lot of Nets fans - the place has been a mainstay for 45 years. We walked over the Brooklyn Bridge to get here passing the Brooklyn Love Locks, admiring … [Read more...] about A Bar Flows in Brooklyn

"I'm actually heading to an Asian grocery store - have to get something for my roommate." "Oh cool, well I love Asian food. Which one?" "Johnny Air Mart - it's the only Filipino store in the city" "You're getting on a flight to Manilla?" "Tsss they do air freight to PI and remittance, too." "Ok, so are you making some adobo, why walk two miles to get some … [Read more...] about Johnny Air Mart

The Maid is Back

August 7, 2020 by chito

The Maid of the Mist has run continuously since 1885 and for a few months this year, the season was delayed. Thankfully, the Maid came back at the end of June with 50% capacity and PPE requirements, and she's just as amazing as ever. For a good 5 minutes, a moment of time that seems to last an eternity, your heart stops and you struggle to catch your breath. With the face … [Read more...] about The Maid is Back

The Beach @ Pop’s Seafood Shack Long Island

July 25, 2020 by chito

After 3 weeks in the shop, I was happy to be back in the cab. I was surprised that I was able to book an Amazon load a block away heading to NJ. To my consternation Amazon cancelled the load which is fairly common these days. It's been 3 long weeks getting repairs, so I wasn't gonna stay parked for long. Didn't want to head to Jersey since i there's a toll coming back into the … [Read more...] about The Beach @ Pop’s Seafood Shack Long Island

After I retired from the Navy, I attended George Washington University to earn my MBA. I left with a diploma, and with a food tech startup called RUNINOut. Our goal was to add as many restaurants, stores and attractions to the directory and after running it for five years, I felt I had oversaturated the local Washington, DC market. It was time to take RUNINOut on the road. In order for my startup to grow, I had to add more restaurants – that meant getting outside the Beltway and exploring the highways and byways in small town suburbia. I bought a truck and drove cross-country for two years. Here's my adventures in the Washington, DC area and beyond.
